Small Circle Jujitsu
In Commemoration of Great Grand Master Wally Jay
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Great Grand Master Wally Jay, the founder of the art of Small Circle Jujitsu, on May 29, 2011. He will be truly missed by his many students, family, and friends. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts, minds and actions of those who stay true to his art.
Great Grand Master Jay's brilliance and innovation made him a truly legendary figure in the martial arts world. He refused to be limited by convention. His groundbreaking principles of Small Circle Theory were innovations based on his earlier studies in Danzan Ryu, Judo and Jujitsu with great teachers such as Juan Gomez, Ken Kawachi, and Henry Okazaki, and his many years of training award winning competitors. Small Circle Theory became fully developed as Small Circle Jujitsu, a martial art now recognized the world over. His teachings have influenced many other great martial artists, including the infamous Bruce Lee, creator of Jeet Kune Do, with whom he was also a close friend.
In addition to Japanese martial arts, Great Grand Master Jay was a good boxer. His revolutionary approach was to combine boxing and jujitsu in live application. He was known all over the San Francisco Bay Area for demonstrations where his student would throw real punches, and he would apply jujitsu locks and throws - literally grabbing limbs out of the air.
Great Grand Master Jay was a true pioneer - a small town boy from Kalihi, (O'ahu, Hawai'i) who through hard work, vision, and perseverance profoundly influenced people around the world. His legacy will live on...

Some Forgotten History of Small Circle Jujitsu
The late Great Grand Master Wally Jay developed the art of Small Circle Jujitsu based on his many years of practical experience with jujitsu, kung fu, aikido, wrestling, and boxing; and principles of wrist action he had learned from one of his teachers, Sensei Ken Kawachi. It was also influenced by his collaboration with Grand Master Bruce Lee, who was developing his own philosophy of Jeet Kune Do at the same time. Small Circle Jujitsu emphasizes powerful
use of the wrist and two way action to create small, tighter, more effective jujitsu locks.
Professor Hundon studied with Great Grand Master Wally Jay from 1976 through 2003. As a new student of jujitsu, he was already an accomplished fighter, with a background in Jun Fan, Chinese Kenpo, and boxing. Quickly progressing in jujitsu, he became the assistant to Great Grand Master Jay, demonstrating and teaching with him throughout the 1970's and 1980's. He also taught at Great Grand Master Jay's Home Dojo until it closed in 2003.
The 1970's were a pivotal time, when Great Grand Master Jay was developing his Small Circle Theory. In the early 1980's he officially announced the founding of the new art of Small Circle Jujitsu. Professor Hundon was Great Grand Master Jay's top student during this whole period, and was the first fighter to use Small Circle Jujitsu in tournament competition. He earned international notoriety as a formidable fighter through his tournament career, and was dubbed 'the dancer who is a jujitsu fighter' by the media. Professor Hundon's reputation helped his teacher to establish Small Circle Jujitsu as a well known martial art.
Many people do not know that Great Grand Master Jay was an avid boxer as well as a jujitsu practitioner. In demonstrations he would use his fluid footwork to move, bob and weave -- snatching jujitsu locks from the air as Professor Hundon threw jabs, crosses and hooks at him with full speed and power. These demonstrations were originally held throughout the Bay Area of Northern California before most people in the U.S. had ever heard of jujitsu. Later on they would perform these demonstrations around the country and internationally, creating quite a sensation.
Great Grand Master Jay's legacy is now legendary. Universal Martial Arts Academy is proud to pay homage to Great Grand Master Wally Jay's Small Circle Jujitsu, one of the roots of Ju Trap Boxing.
